CE meets Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia during Kuala Lumpur visit
MACAU, September 4 - The Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, met today with the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Mr Ouyang Yujing, in that country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. They exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between Macao and Malaysia in various fields, including trade, tourism and economic matters.
The Chief Executive, leading a Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) delegation, arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday evening (2 September), following stops in Singapore and the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, as part of an eight-day official visit to the three Southeast Asian countries.
During the meeting, Mr Sam expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia for its strong support for the MSAR delegation’s visit to the Southeast Asian nation. The Chief Executive explained that the visit had aimed to expand practical cooperation and strengthen the friendly relations between Macao and Malaysia. The visit also served as an excellent opportunity to promote the strong vitality and institutional advantages of the “One country, two systems” principlea, showcasing to the local community Macao’s achievement made since its return to the motherland – a positive development trend characterised by sustained and steady economic growth, social stability and harmony, and continuous improvement in people's livelihood and well-being, he added.
Also, efforts were focused on promoting to various sectors in Malaysia the significant opportunities arising from Macao’s advancement of appropriate economic diversification and the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, aiming to attract Malaysian enterprises to explore business opportunities in Macao and Hengqin and jointly benefit from regional collaborative development, Mr Sam added.
The Chief Executive highlighted that Macao and Malaysia share solid foundations for cooperation, with cultural affinities and strong people-to-people ties, making the prospects for bilateral collaboration highly promising.
Malaysia will be an important partner for the MSAR’s “Down South” strategy, Mr Sam stated. He expressed hope that the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia would continue to provide support, facilitating deeper exchanges and cooperation between Macao and Malaysia across multiple fields, and enhancing connectivity between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asian markets, thereby injecting greater momentum into regional collaborative development.
The three-nation Southeast Asia official visit had proceeded smoothly and successfully achieved its intended objectives, Mr Sam said.
Ambassador Ouyang welcomed Mr Sam and his delegation. He noted Macao’s development was encouraged by its positive trajectory, adding that there was vast potential for cooperation between Macao and Malaysia across multiple sectors.
Malaysia ranks first among member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for outbound travel, and there has been a growing number of international visitors to Macao. These numbers highlighted the significant complementarity between Macao and Malaysia in terms of tourism resources and visitor markets, Ambassador Ouyang stated.
During the meeting, he also talked about Macao’s tourism infrastructure, including indicators such as hotel room capacity, and expressed strong confidence in the prospects for tourism collaboration with Malaysia.
Mr Ouyang further remarked that he was fully aware of the MSAR Government’s ongoing effort in advancing appropriate economic diversification while better serving and integrating into national development. Macao is playing an increasingly important role within the Greater Bay Area. With strong support from the country, Macao’s future development prospects would be even broader, Mr Ouyang added.
Also attending the meeting were: Macao’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Ms Ng Wai Han; the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Chan Kak; the Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes; the Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Mr Kong Chi Meng; Minister-Counsellors of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, Mr Wang Jiarong and Mr Lin Shiguang; and Counsellor of the Embassy, Mr Yang Daqi.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Chief Executive, Ambassador Ouyang and other guests officiated at the launch ceremony of the “Study in Macao” Education Fair, and witnessed the signing of 12 education cooperation agreements during the event.
