CE meets representatives of overseas Chinese community and chambers of commerce during Malaysia visit
MACAU, September 4 - The Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Malaysian Senator and Chairman of the Malaysia-China Business Council, Mr Low Kian Chuan, along with several overseas Chinese community leaders and representatives of chambers of commerce. They exchanged views on further strengthening economic and trade cooperation between Macao and Malaysia.
Mr Sam, leading a Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) delegation, arrived in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday evening (2 September), after visiting Singapore, as well as Jakarta, Indonesia, as part of an eight-day official visit to the three Southeast Asian countries.
During the meeting, held on Thursday (3 September), Mr Sam noted that President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia last year had ushered in a new “golden 50 years” in China-Malaysia relations, creating fresh opportunities for Macao-Malaysia collaboration. Malaysia is one of Macao’s most important economic and trade partners within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), he added.
Over the years, exchanges and cooperation between Macao and Malaysia in terms of trade, economic matters, conventions and exhibitions, and tourism have continued to deepen, said Mr Sam. Macao is intensifying implementation of its “1+4” strategy for appropriate economic diversification, promoting industries such as tourism, the cultural sector, traditional Chinese medicine, modern financial services, and high technology. These areas are closely aligned with Malaysia’s development trajectory, offering significant potential for bilateral cooperation, he added.
The MSAR Government continued to employ its “joint voyage” model for official visits by bringing to Malaysia a delegation of enterprises from Macao, Hengqin and other parts of the Chinese mainland. The participating businesses represented a range of sectors, including trade and investment, technology, traditional Chinese medicine, tourism, culture, and halal industries.
Through roadshows, business-matchmaking sessions and the signing of cooperation agreements, the delegation’s visit aimed to build connections with Malaysian enterprises and expand opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation, Mr Sam stated.
He expressed hope that Malaysian community leaders and representatives of chambers of commerce would make use of their resources to seize the opportunities presented by the integrated development of Hengqin and Macao, and by deepening Macao-Malaysia ties. The Chief Executive also encouraged them to help connect high-quality resources and leading enterprises from both sides, enabling them jointly to explore markets on the Chinese mainland and in Southeast Asia, achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
Mr Low welcomed Mr Sam and his delegation to Malaysia, noting that Macao and Malaysia had long maintained frequent exchanges and close relations. He highlighted Macao’s mature international platform for conventions and exhibitions, as well as the city’s extensive network of Chinese entrepreneurs. He also noted Macao’s role as a “precise connector” between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and as a key part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Mr Low said stronger economic cooperation between Malaysian enterprises and the Macao-Hengqin region could help Malaysian businesses gain access to the Greater Bay Area, as well as to markets in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries. He also said that the overseas Chinese community linked to Macao had deep roots and played a significant role in society, which could help other overseas Chinese investors and businesses establish a presence in Macao and Hengqin, while serving as an important bridge for fostering cooperation between the various sides.
Mr Low affirmed that Malaysia’s Chinese community and entrepreneurs would further leverage Macao’s platform functions, combining the respective strengths and resources of both sides to write a new chapter of cooperation.
Also present at the meeting were: Macao’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Ms Ng Wai Han; the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Chan Kak; the Rector of the Macao University of Tourism, Ms Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan; the Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, Ms Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes; the President of the Board of Directors of Macao’s Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute, Mr Che Weng Keong; the Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University, Mr Zhou Zhongrong; Minister-Counsellors of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, Mr Wang Jiarong and Mr Lin Shiguang; and several Malaysian community leaders and chamber of commerce representatives.
